What is a poker waiting list?
If a specific game is full they will start a waiting list for players who are interested in that particular game. Once a seat comes available they will call a person’s name In the order they were placed on the list.
What is a poker rake?
A poker rake is a commission that is taken by the casino on each live poker game. The fee structure is normally seen on low stake cash games. Typically it’s a 5-10% rake for each hand with a max amount of $3 - $5 per hand. A tournament rake may be as much as 10% of the buy in of the tournament but will vary from one casino to another.
Are cell phone and other mobile device usage allowed at the poker table?
Many of the casinos in Las Vegas do not allow players to use cell phones but will allow mobile devices such as iPods at the table but you should always read any signs posted or ask just to double check.
How should I protect my poker hand?
When playing poker you can protect your hand by making sure you do not show other players your hand. You should always place a chip or other card topper on your cards in order to keep them from being mucked by the dealer.
What happens if I act out of turn?
Depending on what action was taken but it may be binding depending on the call of the dealer and if there was no call, bet or raise before it is the player’s proper turn.
What do typical hand signals mean?
Tapping or knocking on the table is normally taken as a check. If you toss your cards or push them away this is considered a fold or muck.
How do I raise?
The first thing you should do if you plan on raising another person’s bet you should verbally say “Raise” just so they do not think you are calling when placing chips in front of you. If you place a larger chip in front of you without announcing a raise it will only be considered a call.
How do I reraise?
Any reraises should be at least the minimum size of the previous bet unless a player intends to go all in.
What is a call?
A call is when one player bets and one or more players place the same amount of equal or higher value to the original bet in the pot.
Can other players or friends help me make a decision on what to do?
No one should be giving advice on how to play your hand and spectators may be asked to leave if repeatedly inputs on live hands. There is a one player per hand rule which is also known as kibitzing.
Can I remove chips from the table and share with another player?
Once the chips have been placed on the table you cannot remove them nor can you share them with other players. If so you may both be asked to leave the table.
Where should I place my bets?
All bets should be placed in eye sight across the betting line in front of your hands. You should never toss your chips into the pile otherwise the dealer may call a dead hand. They cannot count how much of a bet you placed if you splash the pot with your chips.
What does muck mean?
Muck is when a player folds their cards without displaying what there were to the other players.
Can I show my cards to other players?
You should never reveal any of your cards even whether you are folding or still actively in the hand.
Can I eat at the table?
Most poker rooms will not only allow you to eat while you play but have servers who will take your order and deliver it to you at the table. Just remember to tip as its typically how they make their extra money.
Can I bring my own drink to the poker room?
Normally you cannot bring outside drinks especially alcohol into a casino.
